The Region
Literally meaning the "highlands" of  Catalonia, this special wine growing area lies to the South of Priorat. Terra Alta is comprised of both new wineries and long-established and experienced cooperatives that cultivate both native and imported grape varieties. There is also considerable investment in new technology. The DO consists of a total of 12 municipalities located in the west of the province of Tarragona.

As the name of the growing area indicates, it is situated in rolling hills of great beauty, captured by Picasso in paintings during summers that he spent here. Due largely to its geographical isolation, this area primarily produced wine for its own local market until recently, and it continues to preserve a variety of traditional winemaking methods.

The Winery
ALTAVINS VITICULTORS cellars are located in Batea, in the heart of the Terra Alta D.O. in the southwest of Catalonia. The project of ALTAVINS VITICULTORS started in 1999 combining different concepts based on the soil characteristics from various areas, the special vineyards placed on this soils, and the combination of the age of the vineyards, the growers action on them, the varieties, the situation and exposure, etc.

The first results of this combination from all of these values, were bottled in 2001.  With a limited production of 50,000 bottles we are still working to product wines of maximum quality, based on control from the vineyard until the wine reaches our costumers.
